Abstract:

The objective is to promote up-take and commercialization of technologies and greater awareness of the opportunities in downstream Palm Oil sector.

In Sabah alone, downstream palm oil industries are estimated to be able to generate RM100 billion worth of economic activities. The state has about 1.4 million hectares of oil palm plantation and produces 31% of Malaysia's annual crude palm oil output. POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, a state-owned company under the MID, is tasked with organizing the conference.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Haji Aman has been invited to officiate the opening of the conference, which expects participation from policy makers, bankers, technology suppliers, researchers and industrial players. Five papers will be delivered at the conference, including 'Developing of Pulp & Paper Products from Empty Fruit Bunches', 'Converting Empty Fruit Bunches into Briquettes and Pellets' and Vermicompost, the Premium Organic Fertilizer from Biomass', 'Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) Biodiesel: Next Generation Palm Biodiesel'.

Oil palm biomass includes fronds and trunks from the plantations, and empty fruit bunches, palm kernel shells and mesocarp fibres from the palm oil mills. These wastes great potentials for myriad of industrial applications but remain under-utilized. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board, which has also been invited to the conference, has developed many technologies which are ready for commercialization.

POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, which is developing the Lahad Datu palm oil industrial cluster, is in the forefront of promoting value-adding downstream industries in Sabah to optimize value, create wealth and jobs.
