Summary:

This report is undertaken in the context of Malaysia's longstanding leading role in the global palm oil industry and Sabah's important role within the national oil palm industry. While Malaysia has since been overtaken by Indonesia as the leading producer of crude palm oil (CPO), the palm oil industry continues to be an important income earner for both the state and the nation. The country's continuing effort to develop the downstream processing side of thepalm oil industry would arguably facilitate Malaysia's leading position in the global palm oil industry. Seen in this context, the development of POIC Lahad Datu is rightly an integral part of this effort.
