Good Environmental Protection Habits Start With The Individual

LAHAD DATU, Sat. (June 28, 2008) - Every citizen should play his role in environmental protection beginning with self-discipline, and spreading the same mindset to family, the work place and society at large.

This is the encouragement from the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Haji Nasrun Hj Mansur at a mangrove planting project at the palm oil industrial cluster (POIC Lahad Datu) here today.

"We cannot hope to change the attitude of others (towards environmental protection) if we don't first discipline ourselves," he said in a speech delivered by his People Development Leader, Encik Aljin Johnny.

About 100 people took part in what was called the 'Mangrove Rejuvenation' gotong royong project organized in conjunction with the World Environmental Day this month.

The project was part of the efforts by POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd (the state-owned company developing POIC Lahad Datu) to promote environmental awareness, as well as awareness of the cluster project aimed at promoting palm oil downstream processing industries.

POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd is collaborating with about 20 government departments and agencies and Lahad Datu-based non-governmental organizations in a series of community activities. They include an on-going programme conducting talks on career guidance for secondary schools and a children's drawing and colouring contests to be held in conjunction with the National Day celebrations this August.

Meanwhile, organizing chairman Encik Jurimin Ebin, the Lahad Datu Forestry Officer, said about 500 mangrove seedlings were planted in an area affected by land reclamation of POIC Lahad Datu.

He said the Forestry Department, which paid for the seedlings, has an on-going programme throughout Sabah to plant mangrove.

"We will continue to support this activity in rejuvenating the mangrove swamps," he added.
